So, John and Sherry from Young House Love. Remember when I met them in Cincinnati? Good times.
Anyway, to the surprise of no one who reads their site regularly (like me), they created their own lighting collection with a local lighting company in Virginia, Shades of Light. And it is seriously awesome. Creative, fun, bright colors, and all under $99! Yes, under $99! I daresay that is cheaper than some of the lights I have been researching (from IKEA) for the guest room makeover. Oh yeah, we’re still working on the guest room. And even though I had originally planned to paint it a deep, smoky gray – we went with this color instead! So I poked around their collection a little and this is what I found.
I love Burger (their dog) as much as the next person, but I know two little panthers who would be very offended by this choice!

Such a gorgeous light fixture – but for the guest room? I don’t think so. Maybe somewhere in a kitchen?

Oh the farmhouse pendants always get me. So cool. But in a guest room? Nope. Maybe over a quirky wooden dining table?

This one is definitely runner-up. It picks up some color from the artwork. And it’s so unique. But maybe not enough.

But this one. Oh the over-sized globe pendant. It’s a winner! I love that this light fixture will really make a statement (it’s two feet wide) in a room that gets a lot of varied traffic and that it coordinates with the wall color (I think it might be more green, but it’s hard to tell). And as mentioned by John and Sherry, I love the idea of the pattern on the ceiling if you use a clear bulb. So, light fixture is purchased – more about the guest room to come!

Here’s another point of view for you to ponder.
I’m not a fan of those light fixtures. my eyes are sensitive to light and looking at a bare bulb makes me dizzy and sick to my stomach. i know that those sorts of light fixtures are popular right now, but i live in fear of them.
when we’re invited to someone’s house for the first time i pray that they don’t have any open bulb fixtures… and I try to remember to take my sunglasses with me in case that they do. otherwise, if I don’t have my shades, we all have to sit in the dark with the lights off– or i leave.
[the comment section won't let me use upper case letters. is this how it's supposed to be working? kind of like it, actually. i feel whimsical.]

Hi Ally! I actually agree with that point of view, now that I thought about the usability a little more. That’s the problem with those of us who design…sometimes we forget about the fact that people will actually need to FUNCTION in the room too! Oh and the lowercase thing…we just tested it and now it works fine, so who knows? We’ll go with the whimsical idea for now…
I understand the coolness factor. Thanks for listening to my take on them.
And fyi, as I type in my comment it is appearing all in lower case. Also the comment box does not entirely fit on the vertical column of white, so the box is shifting suddenly to the right as I get over to the right edge and to the left when I hit return. Kind of freaky.
Hi Kristen,
These are great lights, you always pick such good stuff.
HOWEVER
I agree with Ally Bean’s concern: might these be blinding?
“Carl”
Ha yes, they might be blinding. But it would look so cool! In a photo shoot! Point taken though.
Of course we need all of those lights for future projects, FYI.
I love their line at Shades of light. i am already picturing all of them in a home i don’t own yet. haha. can’t wait to see the one you chose in the guest bedrooM!

I agree – all of their lights are awesome! I kind of want every single one, although I wish there was a cat light too.
I have fallen in love with the large wire globe lantern. Sadly i live in the UK and have no idea where to buy it in Europe.
there must be a way
The cheapest quote i got was in excess of $400 to ship
Oh I love that one too! That stinks about the shipping (maybe because it’s so big). Could you make due with two of the smaller size? They might be easier to ship.
guest room? Are they too big? they seen to require a large ceiling space-but Kristen loves design-so I can’t wait to see a picture of the completed guest room.
Hi Mom – we can’t wait to see it either (we’re a little behind, ha). I know the fixture is large, but I think it will work – it will be cool and dramatic!
