Design books on my desk!

So, here I am again, and yes this is the second of several posts you’ll see from me today. I *might* have some homework that is due tomorrow and I *might* have waited until the last possible minute to complete it. Even though it’s been years since graduate school, it’s refreshing that nothing has really changed. I think?
So what inspires me. Well that’s easy, right? Since this is a blog about design, I would say…um, design? While I might not have spent all day actually doing my homework, I did spend all day thinking about what inspires me specifically about design.
I don’t mean to be so melodramatic, but I really do believe that design can and will change the world. I guess what I mean is that I think everything is better in the world when good design is involved. Nothing gives me more joy in the world than spending time in a well-designed, well-decorated room. Somehow it makes me feel relaxed and energized at the same time – basically it makes me feel as if everything is right with the world. For me, good design is just as refreshing and ultimately inspiring as viewing art in a museum. I love good design, and I define “good” design as anything that elicits a positive emotion from me. And I see good design absolutely everywhere. I mostly try to concentrate on interior design here, but I love to see good design out in the world too! If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll notice that over the weekend I sent out a picture of the new pears campaign I saw in a magazine. Yes, pears – the fruit! The add was beautiful, inventive, unique, and by using only a few words, a beautiful typeface, and a consistent color scheme, I now think completely differently about pears. Cool, huh? And that’s the thing – I see good design everywhere and I want to share it! I see it in interiors, but also in new cool products, in books, magazines, movies, even in a new lip gloss!
So, it’s design that inspires me. Now and forever. What inspires you?

Good question. I’d say that for me inspiration comes first from nature. I like the changes & sense of rhythm that the seasons force on us. And I like how pretty everything looks or doesn’t look as a result of these changes.
But my second biggest source of inspiration is design. I agree with you that a well designed room elicits a positive feeling in me and makes me want to be a better person.

Hi Ally (glad you’re still reading)
I agree with you about the changes of nature. I lived in CA from 8 years – the weather was beautiful but there was a sameness everywhere and it was hard to feel as inspired as I feel now by nature. I’m glad you feel that way about design too – I’ll definitely be writing more and more about design here!
Hi Kristen! I’m inspired by great design too, and art. Graphic design and collage is what usually gets me the most excited. Visiting contemporary art exhibits is one of my favorite things to do that makes me feel relaxed and energized at the same time.
I know what you mean about art exhibits. Whenever we go, I get so excited talking about it with my husband he needs to remind me to breathe. And then I need to race home a write about it. And then I need a good nap, ha!
