The ModKat Litter Box

So yeah, litter boxes. Ick, I know. But stay with me…I promise this is also about design! I mentioned the Modkat Litter Box here in January, and I wanted to write about how great it is a little bit more. Our little black kitties are the best ever (if you follow me on Instagram I’m sure you’ve seen their cuteness!) and are very adaptable. We use wheat litter only (good for them and not bad for the environment) and they actually share a litter box. This isn’t usually recommended (but they are brother and sister and have always shared a litter box, at the shelter and all of their foster homes). They are super dependent on each other and don’t mind the “closeness”.

In any case, the design of the ModKat is genius! You can check out more detailed information on their website, but the kitties actually jump down into the litter box and then jump back up. There is absolutely not one grain of wheat anywhere! We joke all the time that the only wheat we ever vacuum up anymore is the wheat we spill while scooping! And there is no smell. We scoop at least once a day, but because the box itself is deep and tall, no smell ever really escapes. Sure it’s a very expensive litter box (we actually bought it around Christmas when they had a $50 off coupon), but the best part? They offer a 30-day money back guarantee.

Oh and the design…it’s actually beautiful! In fact, I bet if I hadn’t talked about what it was in the Laundry Room post, no one would have noticed. We have a white one that seamlessly blends into the area in front of the utility sink and it’s a breeze to scoop and even to take out the insert and clean it all the way (we do this once a month). I can’t believe this thing is actually a litterbox! ModKo really thought of absolutely everything. The box is so pretty you could have it in an open location or in a spare bathroom and no one would think anything of it, seriously. So sleek and modern…no wonder the shipping box is printed with their slogan, “Where modern cats do their business.” Indeed.

Oh and for all you doggie lovers, ModKo is coming out with products for you soon as listed here. I bet we’ll be seeing a lot more fantastically designed products from them in the future!

Spring 2012

So I don’t know about you, but up until maybe this week, I kept thinking that Winter would be coming back any day. I remember it snowing in April when I was a kid (in NJ), but I don’t think that was too common. So based on the fact that the weather is just perfect today, I’m declaring the start of Spring (even though I know the official start was really last week). And we all know what Spring means…why shopping, of course!

I put together a little collection of things for my Spring 2012 to share with you all.

Spring 2012

  • Don’t you just love this vintage-style print from Rifle Paper? I love the colors and especially the pink ballons!
  • This shirt from StyleMint is especially appealing to me as it is lightweight cashmere – perfect for this type of weather with a cute cap sleeve too.
  • I have coveted all of the Baggu bags since they came out, but I am particularly obsessed with this silver metallic leather pouch. It’s such a chic option for something as mundane as spare change.
  • I so wish this Tolani scarf from Piperlime wasn’t so darn expensive. It just screams “Kristen” what with my obsession with Pantone squares and all blocks of color!
  • And finally, this hot pink clutch from k.slademade. Because really, who can carry anything you need in such a small bag (certainly not me). But! For a night on the town, who could resist the hot pink?!

A Day at CVS

So, do you ever go into a store for one thing and come out with a basket full of who-knows-what?! Well I sure did over the weekend! First let me say, that I kind of love CVS. It’s close to my house, and they take returns. So when you buy makeup that doesn’t look at all how you thought it would once you try it, you can return it! Shampoo that makes your hair flat, return it! Lotion you hate the smell of, return it! Before we started buying toiletries at CVS, I would buy most of my products at the grocery store or other stores that won’t let you return once the product is opened (I learned later, of course). So what do you do if you hate what you bought?! Return it (if you bought it at CVS, that is)!

I went in for new toothpaste as I am out, and I came home with all this stuff!

So, after the Colgate Optic White toothpaste (has anybody else used this yet? I’m curious to try!), clockwise:

  • Rimmel Lash Accelerated Serum
  • Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in 08 (who could resist?!)
  • Nuance by Salma Hayek Leave-In Treatment (this stuff is amazing and I use it every day. If she ever stops making this I’m going to buy a case!)
  • Nuance by Salma Hayek Smooth & Shine Conditioner
  • Vitafusion Calcium Gummy Vitamins (my supply was getting low)
  • Skintimate Cream Shave (this stuff is amazing but oddly hard to find)
  • Biotin 1000mcg
  • Nuance by Salma Hayek Smooth & Shine Shampoo

So, did you all do any “surprise” shopping this weekend? I think it’s the most fun, ever. Plus, good thing I needed toothpaste, ha!

Oh, Emerson Fry

So I’ve talked about EmersonMade clothes here before (the name has now been changed to Emerson Fry) and wow, have you seen their new Spring/Summer line?! You simply must go check it out. First the style is amazing and the quality is impressive (I love that the label says “Made in New York”, of course!) and most of all the clothes are so, well, pretty!

I always love the feeling she creates. I love clothes from so many different designers (I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned how crazy I am for J.Crew), but the thing I most enjoy about (for the most part, virtual) shopping at Emerson Fry is that she is selling not only clothes, but style. I think it’s partly how the products are styled and photographed, but also because the clothes (and shoes and jewelry) are a combination of classy, carefree, a little bit modern, and a little bit retro. And of course perfect makeup and perfectly imperfect hair helps too!

So let’s see, if money was no object, these are the things I would love, love to buy. What about you? See anything you would like?

Apparently I’m having a little bit of a “green moment.” Probably because I had absolutely no green to wear on Saint Patrick’s day. How is that possible as I am married to someone who is part Irish?! This must be remedied with a green plaid blouse, tie waist dress, the ikat tunic, and of course the stone bead necklaces for a bit more color. Of course!

The IKEA House

So I kind of feel like I should just leave the rest of this post blank. I mean doesn’t “The IKEA House” say it all??!! For those of you who didn’t see the story all over the Internets a few weeks ago…There is a company that will build you a cool, eco-friendly, modular house designed by Ideabox and IKEA. I’m pretty sure I have mentioned my obsession with IKEA many times before, but if not I am mentioning it now! Now before anyone gets a little too excited about big business, quality, etc. and all the other negatives people in design usually say about them. Here’s my take. Some things are good quality and some things are really great quality, and other things? Well, it’s cheap and you need it and hopefully it will last as long as you need!

What I love the most about IKEA though are their small living ideas (another thing I am obsessed with). I particularly enjoy walking around their showrooms (when they are not crowded, a week day night or first thing Sunday morning). You can do this without spending a penny and really spend some time observing how the rooms are set up, how they are decorated, and above all, how you can actually live in them (a fact that unfortunately so much of design often leaves out), which we all know is the most important part!

So now you’ll see why a modular house designed by Ideabox and IKEA would appeal to me so very much! I love the idea that you can find a plot of land and have them come and build you an IKEA house right there. Looking at the price, it is possible that we could have our little house by the ocean someday on a cheap plot of land that no one wants. Perfect!

Here I Am Again!

Well hello there. Last time I was here, it was almost March. And tomorrow is the 17th of March! Where does time go, exactly?!

So…I was supposed to take the test I talked about here today, actually. I didn’t! Ha! Basically I studied for weeks before a 4-day class I took, and then I continued to study for about 2-3 hours a night after that. So what happened? Basically a combination of fear and psyching myself out. And really, I just burned out. I over-studied some topics, so much so that I would get the answer right on the practice tests, but then I would change my answer (wrongly) at the last minute. Yeah. So! Time for a break. I’ve taken this last week off from studying (but not from our obsessive watching of Lost; that’s another post!), but I plan to start studying again this weekend. There is a ton of memorization for this test and I don’t want to forget what I learned so far!

So, that’s why I say I’m back, but only sort of. I’ll still be studying every night for the next few weeks until I take the test, but I’m going to try and spend some time here every night so I don’t burn myself out again. Plus, I missed this blog and you all who read it! Seriously, this blog is one of the most important things in my life and I have big plans for it, so I don’t want to let it fall by the wayside. Basically, I won’t be doing any photography projects and my posts will be shorter (if that is possible, ha) but when I pass the test and I am back here all the time, watch out! :D
