Home Office Re-Design

So I don’t think I mentioned before that we are in the process of re-doing our home office.

Basically it’s a slightly odd-shaped room with a vaulted ceiling that is on the right once you walk through the front door. Optionally I guess it could be another guest bedroom too (although it has no closet) but we’ve always used it as an office. When we were building the house several years ago, we toured a model that had a beautiful built-in desk with cabinets and bookshelves underneath and a way for two people to sit side-by-side. Perfect for us! So that’s what we requested. I know you know where this is going…yeah we didn’t quite get the “model” version.

Anyway, lesson learned, but now that we are using the office a lot more (that’s where I sit typing right now, with a “baby” squirrel cat on my lap), we really need to make it a lot more functional. Unfortunately, the carpet does not extend under the desk, and let’s say replacing the carpet right now was not in the budget. At all. Really the whole office re-do wasn’t in the budget either, so we tried to keep costs as low as possible.

We decided to keep the existing cabinets (they match the cabinets in the rest of the house) but add shelves inside for more organization and cabinet pulls so that I would stop bending a nail every time I opened anything! We removed the bookshelves (which ironically, only fit small paperbacks, so essentially none of the books we owned) and then we were left to deal with the top of the desk. Oh the darn top! It was always way too narrow, far more narrow than any desk either of us had ever used before! And as a special bonus, only1/2 inch plywood was used (it should have been 1 inch, at least) so it bowed. And it was caulked to the wall, so every time either of us used the desk, it would bend and the caulk would split. Lovely.

We looked at oh so many, many options. At every store we could think of. I had a vague idea of using butcher block (the cabinets are white) but it was so expensive, of course. Except at the best place in the world, IKEA. Yes, IKEA saves the day, once again!

I could go on and on and on (clearly) and there will be many more posts (with pictures) in the next few days with more detail! But for now, the whole reason I wrote this post was to say hey, we’re re-doing the office. And look at these cool things I just bought!

In Other News, Part Two and Three

Remember when I said here that I was featured as an Outblush Operative?! Well I’ve been featured there again, this time with a really cool NYC mug and a fantastic must-own book. So stay tuned for a future post of how I styled these items (since I own both of them). Oh and remember this jacket that I talked about? It arrived and it as awesome as I thought and I can’t wait to show you how I wore it!

Pantone and Peacocks and Nail Polish

I’m pretty obsessed with Pantone colors (which I’ll mention oh about 1,000 more times, I’m sure).

When the palette was released, at the time all I could think about was where they got the idea for the palette.  Unless there is a peacock in someone’s backyard, do you think the Pantone design team went to a zoo at some point for color inspiration?!

Even though I know these Fall 2011 colors were announced months ago, I looked at this Beauty Spy Report from Lucky Magazine (October 2011) and thought hmmm, those colors look familiar!

What do you think? Peacock-themed nail polish for the Fall?! Done! Oh and to build a room, a color story if you will, divine! Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this peacock clutch while I was at it!

Me and You and Everyone We Know

I’m sure you know what I’m talking about with this title. No?! You have to watch this movie! Please!

So first, the back story of how I saw this movie…I love independent movies, but since we moved to the Midwest, I haven’t seen that many. There is an independent movie theater that is great and is pretty close, but they usually only show each movie for less than 1 week, so by the time we finally have time to see a movie, we’ve missed it! Anyway, a few years ago my husband brought some videos at a store that was going out of business. To be honest, I think we probably down-sized almost all of our DVD  collection when we did this, unless they were sentimental (given and/or received as a gift) or also likely to be watched again. So Me and You and Everyone We Know made the cut. It is an amazing movie, in story, characters, and especially the way it is shot and edited. Every scene has a dreamy cast of light (maybe it’s just the light of reality) that sometimes makes it hard to watch (on behalf of the characters), but really, you can’t turn away. It is truly a brilliant piece of film making.

A few years later, when her book No one belongs here more than you. was published, of course my husband bought it for me! I can’t say enough about this book. It’s a collection of short stories where all the characters resonate (for me) and all have very complex and yet oddly similar predicaments.

I could go on and on about how amazing I think Miranda July is and so very unique in the world. I tell you all this to also say she has a new movie out, The Future and also a new book, It Chooses You. Please go see the movie and buy her book! I promise you won’t be disappointed (and come back and tell me your opinion!)

In Other News

Hey guess what?! I’m featured today on one of the greatest sites out there – Outblush! If you haven’t heard of this site yet, you must check it out right now! They find the coolest stuff on the Internet (really) and content is updated several times a day (an incredible bonus for those of us who need continuous cool content! Ahem).

Anyway, here is what I wrote about, so look for a follow-up post soon as I ordered the jacket today! So now off to find skinny jeans and tall riding boots! Any suggestions out there?!

The Pulitzer Prize

Well I didn’t win one, of course! But every Spring when the nominations are announced, I always wonder about the origin of such a prestigious award. It turns out that the Pulitzer Prize is actually named after a person, Joseph Pulitzer, and it has been awarded every year since 1917. The prizes in 21 categories are given for excellence in newspaper journalism, literary achievements, and even music composition! So what does this all have to do with design, you might ask? Well per the Pulitzer Prize official site, they recommend this fantastic book of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs (the updated version is available here). The massive coffee table books contains 235 pictures from 1942 through 2007. Amazing! Of course design helps us to see the world as a series of creative decisions, and I think nothing shapes those decisions more than original photographs of world events. Because not only did those events change history, they changed us.

What do you think? Which photographs have had an impact for you?

Black Cats Are Awesome

Yes, black cats are beyond awesome (and look how many there are! on leashes! my dream come true…) and of course this was a very famous shot for the casting call of the Roger Corman movie, The Tales of Terror. Most of all though, it’s a special kind of awesome!
